In 2022-23, the Chemistry Department had a busy year of invited speakers. Our first Sceptical Chymists speaker of the year was Sarah Smith from Bucknell University. Prof. Smith spoke of her work on exploring helical peptides for therapeutic purposes. Our next speaker of the year was Prof. Joe Francisco from University of Pennsylvania who came as part of the Phi Beta Kappa Lecture series. Prof Francisco spoke of his work understanding environmental chemistry and its impacts on our lives. Rounding out the fall semester, our visiting assistant professor and alum, Alecia Achimovich gave a seminar in the Biology Departments seminar series on her research using advanced microscopy techniques for understanding biochemical systems.
The spring semester kicked off with David Punihaole from the University of Vermont speaking on his work to develop new analytical spectroscopic tools to explore Alzheimer’s Disease. Later in the semester, Prof. Abby O’Connor from The College of New Jersey came to campus to discuss iridium-based catalysts for transfer hydrogenation reactions.
On the BMB front, there were seminars from Prof. Nathan Wittenberg (Lehigh University), Prof. René Fuanta (East Stroudburg University), and Dr. Jon Hibshman (University of North Carolina). We also got to hear from X-SIG speakers Anna Haensch (Tufts University) and Nozomi Ando (Cornell University).
Our Musselman Visiting Speaker in March 2023 was Prof. Andy Borovik, University of California-Irvine. Prof. Borovik’s public lecture was “Putting Atoms in their Place One Bond at a Time”.
In addition to the lectures, a highlight of his visit was a heated game of pool between Borovik and Prof. Jameson during a dinner with faculty and students held at the Upper Crust in Gettysburg.
In 2023-24, we are looking forward to hosting two major lecture series. We plan to post information about these lectures on our website. Stay tuned and please join us for either or both if you are in the Gettysburg area!
Biochemist Squire Booker, Pennsylvania State University, will offer a series of presentations at Gettysburg College on October 18-20, 2023. The events are funded by a grant from the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation. For more information, visit our event webpage.
On April 10-12, 2024, polymer chemist, Karen Wooley from Texas A&M University will be on campus as our Musselman Visiting Speaker.
