Grant writing is a difficult and time intensive task with no guarantee of success. Yet, our faculty go through the process whenever possible as a means of supplementing the department and College budget. Grant funding has allowed the Chemistry Department to offer more research opportunities for student and faculty, purchase new or replacement instrumentation and expand opportunities for students to attend professional conferences throughout the United States and abroad. Since 2017, Chemistry Department faculty have received combined external grants in excess of $1,000,000.
Prof. Buettner with Divisional Dean Prof. Darren Glass, Prof. Dan White, Computer Science and Eric Remy, Director of Educational Technology received a grant from the George I Alden Trust for construction of a Quantitative Resource Center (QRC) on the lower level of Glatfelter Hall. Additional funds for the QRC were donated by alumni, Donna Jean Brogan, Math ’60. Donna is professor emeritus of statistics at Emory University and has conducted biostatistical research in the areas of women’s health, mental health and psychosocial health statistics, statistics on breast cancer, and analysis of complex survey data. The QRC, officially named the Donna Jean Brogan Quantitative Resource Center, is a large study space, designed with input from current students, where they can connect with Peer Learning Associates from all science and math departments for help with coursework. The QRC was completed in the summer of 2023 and opened to students in Fall 2023.
